Title: SMCC Technology Instrumentation Program(TIP)

Our vision of providing current technology in Science courses at SMCC was realized as a result of funding from the DOD through the HBCU/MI Infrastructure Support Program. SMCC received $134,000 from the US Department of Defense for:

Major and supporting instrumentation – The DOD provided a DNA sequencer, a PCR unit, a Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrophotometer, a UV-Vis Spectrophotometer and an extensive list of supporting equipment.

Infusion of technology in the classrooms – This grant provided classroom projection systems, a portable visualization laboratory, computers and curriculum.

As a result of this project, SMCC Bioscience student enrollment and the number of bioscience course offerings have doubled in two years. Our students use contemporary scientific laboratory instrumentation to develop individual research projects, and validate their DNA sequences with The Human Genome Project.
