Organizations Supporting SMCC Science

SMCC continues to support Bioscience and provide current educational and scientific technology. Since 2003, SMCC has provided funding for:

  • Major instrumentation and support equipment ($45,000) These funds provided a Scanning UV-VIS Spectrophotometer with kinetics analysis, a digital refractometer, and support equipment.
  • Biotechnology Laboratory ($20,000) – A classroom was refit for biotechnology and houses the DNA sequencer and the PCR.
  • Bioscience Analytical Instrument Room ($10,000) – A storage space was remodeled to house the GC/MS, the FTIR, a UV/VIS, and digital refractometer.
  • Arizona Community Foundation - Community Science Enrichment Program (C-SEP) Grant $50,000.  C-SEP is a dual enrollment college course for high school students that promotes scientific reasoning for the purpose of preparating students for Arizona Science AIMS and for future college science courses.  Over 300 high school students received scholarship as a result of C-SEP grant and successfully completed the college dual enrollment course.

200 of those students have now enrolled in an SMCC college biotechnology course as a result of C-SEP.

These funds are allowing SMCC to expand instrument literacy among students, increase problem-solving skills, and provide centralized locations where students in a variety of classes can access the equipment.
